Illusion and hope
How exciting it is to look forward to Christmas Day! For children it is magical, but no matter the age, it looks like Christmas brings a hope that has an encouraging effect on everyone.
We know very well that we don’t always get everything we expect, and this produces frustrations. We get frustrated:
- As children, for not receiving the expected gifts
- In marriage, for unfulfilled expectations
- With our children, when our advice is ignored
- As employees, for not receiving the expected raise after having given your best
- As patients, for the lack of an effective treatment
- With humanity, because of wars, injustice, poverty, lack of empathy and in general, lack of love.
It seems like we are surrounded by frustrations in all facets of our lives. We even get frustrated with God when He doesn’t do what we expect.
Just as Death and Destruction are never satisfied, so human desire is never satisfied. – Proverbs 27:20
Could it be that we are living an illusion? It is acceptable for the children to have unreal expectations, as they do not have knowledge of all the circumstances. But what about our expectations? We live in a world affected by the consequences of sin. We can’t give what we don’t have.
What about our expectations of God? Are they really expectations or just illusions not based on his word? Can we blame Him for breaking promises He didn’t make?
If anyone has failed to meet expectations, it is us. However, God does not treat us as we deserve. In his love, God sent his son to take our place, paying the ultimate price for our sins: keeping alive the hope of our reconciliation with God.
The true hope begins with the birth of Jesus and finds its foundation on His sacrifice on the cross. Therefore, we can hope with certainty knowing that in His time God will finally deliver creation from all corruption and death (Romans 8: 18-22).
