Sleep on it
Have you ever had to “sleep on it” before making a decision? There are decisions that cannot be taken lightly and you have to “sleep on it” to give yourself enough time to consider the best choice.
The same applies to relationships. Relationships are difficult, and conflicts will eventually surface. Sadly, there are times when we react immediately to our disagreements and make harsh decisions based on how we feel at the moment. This is not the time to listen to your heart; it will deceive you. Making decisions based on our feelings could lead to big regrets. Maybe we should “sleep on it”, as we do with other important decisions. But what if instead, we pray about it?
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7
What a powerful promise! This is a truth that I have experienced firsthand. There have been many times when arguments have led me to think of “solutions” that will satisfy my hurting heart. However, instead of taking matters into my own hands I have brought my grievances before God.
This might sound like a complex prayer, especially when you have been hurt, but it is actually very simple: you just have to tell God how you feel, recognize your inability to make the right decision, and trust God in whatever way He chooses to intervene. It might not sound easy to tell God “Not my will, but yours be done.” But the reward of trusting God is truly a peace that exceeds all understanding.
Sleeping on it sounds like a good idea, but nothing beats praying to God about it.
