The Lord’s Prayer – our provider (part 1)
Give us this day our daily bread – Matthew 6:11
If we believe that God is who He says He is and that He is the creator of everything, we should have no problem trusting Him as our provider. However, due to our human nature, it is difficult to trust someone else with our needs. Let’s face it: we all want to be in control, and praying for our daily bread is yielding too much control.
The concept of trusting God with our needs is not easy even for sincere believers. Praying for our daily bread? No way. I want food security for the rest of my life. When God provides me with manna, I will take as much as I can, so I don’t have to wait on Him again (even if by doing so, I deprive others of their portion). This is not trusting God, but using him.
The bible is clear about our need to work in order to meet our own needs. This is not a contradiction of our prayer for God to be our provider. However, we would not be able to provide if we didn’t have a job or if we were incapacitated due to health issues, and our families would lose their provider if we die. It is clear that we can only be providers when all these circumstances are true: we have no control over any of these.
in him all things hold together. – Colossians 1:17
We need to trust God. Every day that we are alive, in good health and have a job is a day that God made happen. Without Him, the universe would cease to exist. When we understand this, then we will comprehend why it is so important to pray for our daily bread: to trust our lives to God.
Let’s not become like the man in Jesus’s parable, who build larger barns (his retirement account) just to be told that we was going to die the very same day. As much as we can plan, the reality is that we only have but an illusion of control.
So, what should we do? Pray to God for your daily bread.
There are certainly questions about God as our provider. We will discuss those in our next blog.
