Return
After Christmas day a new department becomes the busiest in the stores: the returns department. Returning a gift might sound ungrateful, but I guess it is fine to return something that you didn’t need, didn’t fit you or you just didn’t like. After all, it is assumed that the intention of the giver is to make you happy. Of course, there all always exceptions, as you wouldn’t return a gift of great value, that is, if you can appreciate the value of your gift.
We have all been given a gift of great value: eternal life in Jesus. This is the greatest gift we can ever receive. Due to our sinful condition (no one is exempted), there is no way for us to regain access to God on our own merits. But God in his love, decided to give us this precious gift, by relieving us from the price (death), and granting it to us by faith in his son, who paid the price for us.
The gift can’t be returned (who would want to?). However, some have rejected it.
A gift that no one rejects is the latest version of x or y gadget. We want it even if we already have an older version in perfectly working conditions. Why? Because we think that having things will make us happy, even when we know that its satisfaction won’t last.
We should stop fooling ourselves and accept the reality that the only gift that can make us happy has already been given to us.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:23
Be thankful for the gifts that you have received, but above all, be thankful for the gift of salvation in Jesus Christ. Learn to cherish it, and your search for happiness will be over.
