Fall
Another fall season. I find myself again responsible for collecting the accumulated leaves in the yard. It is not something I want, but I think the exercise will do me good. I got my rake and when I was just about to start raking, I noticed something that had never caught my attention before. In a moment, what looked like a burden became a moment of admiration. The colors of the leaves on the ground reminded me of God.
Once a person told me that she was sad because the trees looked as if they were naked. But those of us who are used to seasonal changes know that those trees that now look naked will eventually dress up in preparation to their return to all their splendor.
The interesting thing about this process is that it happens without human intervention. The tree loses its leaves to survive the winter season. But at the same time, the tree is actively preparing the new leaves that will begin to emerge once spring arrives. This rebirth is part of its design. God made them that way.
You and I were also designed by God. God created us for life. We are designed for beauty (we were created in His likeness). Why then does it seem that we live in an endless autumn and winter? Unlike trees, we can resist God’s processes. We believe we know a better way to survive difficult times. We refuse to allow our leaves to fall. We take root in old things, thus avoiding the process necessary to be reborn; and as a result, we stay stuck in the path of death.
If the fall of the leaves of the trees can paint a beautiful picture, how much more beautiful will it be to see our lives headed in the direction of God’s beautifully planned designed for a new life?
