A grateful heart
There are many reasons to be grateful. During the celebration of Thanksgiving we make an effort to remember those reasons in order to formally thank God for them. But why wait for a specific day to give thanks to God?
I think one answer is that most of the time we take our blessings for granted. We take for granted our families, our work, our health, and our possessions.
I think another answer is that, because of our ability to work to get what we want, we see ourselves as self-sufficient, and as a result, we see no need to show gratitude for what we have achieved.
In order to have a truly grateful heart we need to understand that what we have received was not by chance or as a result of our own efforts. Although there are many things that we can achieve by our own efforts, one important exception is salvation and eternal life, which can only be received through Jesus Christ.
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins. – Ephesians 2: 1
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Corinthians 15:57
Salvation and eternal life are the reason why people are grateful to God even when their basic needs are unmet. These are the reasons why there are people who are grateful to God even when their health is failing. These are the reasons why there are people who are grateful to God even when their lives are in constant danger. Those who are going through these circumstances can be grateful because they are certain that they will receive the reward reserved for those who have faith in God.
No matter what we have, or even what we do not have, we all have a good reason to have a grateful heart to God.
