Are you on track with your New Year’s resolutions?
We all make New Year’s resolutions. However, it is likely that in the course of the year we might forget many of these resolutions. It is still early in the year, but it is possible that you have already discarded some of your resolutions.
The probability of discarding a resolution is inversely proportional to how important it is for you to achieve that resolution. For example, if the resolution is to lose weight, the likelihood of achieving that goal is not going to depend on the desire to lose weight, but on the importance that this goal has in your priorities ranking. This will determine the effort you will put into achieving the goal.
We may have many resolutions, but the most important are those that lead us to spiritual growth. We can achieve goals in the professional, academic or financial areas among others, but no achievement is complete without spiritual growth. Achieving any goal without spiritual growth is like trying to fill a broken jar with water.
How can we grow spiritually? There is no other way than through a relationship with Jesus; the one through which we receive the Spirit of Life (John 14:16-17).
With every New Year we want to achieve new things in our lives. There are areas of our character, lifestyles or behaviors that we want to change or discard. These are some of the benefits that we receive in Jesus.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. – 2 Corinthians 5:17
Through Jesus we receive the assurance of eternal life, and as a result, a new perspective about life and death, about life problems, about our relationship with other people, and about what constitutes happiness. Of course, these benefits are not received instantaneously but gradually. It is an ongoing effort.
Many want to achieve these benefits, but not everyone receives them. The key is to maintain a constant relationship with Jesus. It’s like the New Year’s resolutions; achieving them does not depend on desire but on the importance a relationship with Jesus has in our priorities ranking.
How important is it for you to achieve these benefits? Make your relationship with Jesus the most important resolution of each day.
