The great gift
Every gift has a purpose. Some gifts are by request, so its purpose is clear to the recipient. Other gifts are something that is needed. But sometimes we receive gifts for which we find no purpose. In this case we ask ourselves “What are they trying to tell me with this present?”
When we think of Christmas it comes to mind Jesus’ birth, parties, joy, celebration, but above all gifts. We are clear that the birth of Jesus was a gift to humanity. But, do we really understand the importance, and the reason for this gift? We need to inquire into its purpose.
Jesus didn’t come to the world without a reason; his coming has a great purpose. When we were created God gave us authority to exercise dominion over the rest of the creation (Genesis 1:28). We had no need. Even eternal life was within our reach (Genesis 2:9). But we were not satisfied, and wanted to become like God (Genesis 3:5-6), essentially telling Him “I do not need you. I can be my own god. I can define my own destiny.” In effect, we broke our relationship with God, yielding to deception, and at the same time, submitting to the insatiable thirst of evil. The result: the loss of access to eternal life (death) and separation from God’s presence.
The story of Eden has repeated itself in us when one way or another we have rejected the counsel of His word, believing ourselves self-sufficient to discern between good and evil. This attitude leads us to fall into the same error of Adam and Eve, and at the same time, share the same punishment (Romans 3:23).
But in his love, God decided not to leave humanity without hope, and determined to carry out a plan which would provide an escape door for those who want to reconcile with Him. The execution of this plan began with the birth of Jesus, continued with His sacrifice on the cross, and had a climax with His resurrection.
The true gift of Christmas is the birth of a chance to reconcile ourselves with God. But like any other gift, it will not be useful until you let its purpose become a reality in your life.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name – John 1:12
Receive the great gift of God.
