Where are the keys?
Probably everybody has gone through the experience of losing the car keys. This usually happens at the worst time, when you really need to use the car. You need to go to an important meeting and you are already late. The worst thing is that you know that the keys are somewhere in the house but you can’t just find them. Losing your car keys makes you feel out of control. But there are other keys that are more important than your car keys: the keys of death and Hades.
Death is one of the things most feared by humans. Death is seen as the end of all things. No matter what we do, sooner or later we will have to face death. We have no control over these keys. They were lost when Adam and Eve sinned against God and were banished from the Garden of Eden, and denied access to the tree of life. But thanks God that Jesus recovered these keys for us.
I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. – Revelations 1:18
How great is to remember where you left your car keys! Now is just a matter of getting them. But if you don’t go and get them it is as if they were still lost. The same thing happens with the keys of death. The keys were found, but if you don’t go to Jesus you will still be subject to death without hope. When you come to Jesus you obtain the assurance that even after you die He has the key of death and Hades, and will raise you to a new life: no more fear of death.
Where are the keys? Jesus has them.
Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. – 1 Corinthians 15:51-57
