Is there any love left?
It is sad how much you hear in the news about people who are devoted to stealing money from other people by deception. This trend makes us doubt when someone approaches us for help, and as a result, we harden our hearts out of fear of being deceived. Unfortunately, those affected by our inaction are the people who are in real need.
The Bible predicted this situation by telling us that in the last days “because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). This is not told to us so that we guard ourselves against possible deceptions, but rather so that we do not harden our hearts (But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”- 1 John 3:17).
Although it is true that we are troubled by the possibility of being deceived, we should be even more troubled if there are people in need because we missed the opportunity to help them. Love and mercy are extremely important themes in the teachings of Jesus. Pray that our hearts will be transformed so that our kindness to others is an action that flows naturally as a result of the love we have received from God.
If when helping others we also share the message of hope in Jesus, we will not only be supplying an economic need, but also supplying a spiritual need, both for those who are truly needy, as for those who are just trying to deceive. We then see that in one way or another, God is glorified.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[a] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:16
Let us therefore commit ourselves to display without fear the love that we have received from God.
