The effects of Coronavirus have reached professional sports. Games are being played at empty stadiums and arenas with no fans. In an effort to make things better, fake prerecorded cheers are being played, and in top of that, they are using carboard cutouts to simulate the presence of fans. I don’t know about you, but for me this seems impersonal, senseless, and deceitful. I prefer the real thing or nothing at all.
Imagine living life like that. No one to cheer you up, no one to be there for you, or someone faking their support just to make you feel better. We can all feel like that at times. Loneliness has a way of affecting people. But I have news for you: We are never really alone. God is with us.
Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. – Psalms 139:7-10
These words teach us that we can’t hide from God. But the correct perspective is that God’s presence is always with us. His love for you is not faked.
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. – 1 John 4:10
If we were watched with the same expectations that professional players are scrutinized, our sinful lives would only deserve boos from God. However, God doesn’t see us as slumping players, but as a father who wants the best for his children.
I don’t know what you are going through, but there is one thing for sure: Someone is cheering for you. You have a fan in God.
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it – Psalms 139:5-6
