I Do
The words ‘I do’ could be the most anticipated moment or the most frightening moment of someone’s life. Of course, that depends on each person’s point of view. For some, committing for life with the person they love is a desired moment. For others, this type of commitment is equivalent to surrendering their freedom.
There are many situations in which we have to relinquish our freedom by submitting ourselves to the authority of others:
- During our childhood and adolescence to our parents and teachers
- Then to university authorities
- And the rest of our lives we have to submit:
- to authorities of law and order
- to our employer
- to government agencies (taxes, regulations, …)
- to the landlord or the mortgage bank
- with our family
- with our friends
- with society
- …
Like it or not, life is full of commitments. These may seem like a limitation of our freedom, but they are necessary to try to live in harmony.
We should not forget the need of making a commitment with God. Many want to escape this commitment, but it is the most important of our lives.
They resist because they think they will lose their freedom. But, to what freedom do they refer to? Everything we do is directly or indirectly influenced. In other words, what we think we do on our own will, is the result of the influence over us. The only control we have is the option to decide how we are influenced.
After all, there are very few things that we can control in life. How about the afterlife?
if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. – Romans 10:9
When we commit ourselves to God, we obtain eternal life, something that we could not do for ourselves.
To submit our lives to the will of God is not to lose freedom, but gain and true freedom. This is a worthy commitment.
