Joy
It seems like Christmas season celebration starts earlier every year. As soon as October is over Christmas decorations start showing up in a lot of places. Aside from the commercial aspect, we cannot deny that decorations somehow inspire a feeling of joy that is typical of Christmas. And I am not referring only to the children, which eagerly await the time to receive their gifts, but also to the adults, who recognize that the season also brings a greater opportunity to share with family and friends.
But when I think about all the feeling associated with the celebration, I wonder why we can’t live all year long with the same joy. Why do we have to limit the celebration to the Christmas season?
I think that the primary reason is that we have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. Limiting the celebration exclusively to the birth of Jesus is losing perspective of its scope. This event means God’s gift to the world, which began with the birth of Jesus, and culminated with His death and resurrection. The child whose birth we celebrate came into the world with a clearly defined mission: to rescue humanity from its condition of destruction and its destiny of condemnation.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. – Matthew 1:21
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. – John 3:17-18
We can have many gifts on our wish list, but there is only one that we really need, and this is the salvation that God offers us through Jesus. Without this gift we were destined to condemnation. When the scope of this event is put into perspective, we can see that there is no reason to limit the celebration to the Christmas season, and that we can celebrate every day with a joy that is not inspired by decorations or festivities, but by remembering what Jesus did for us.
I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. – Luke 2:10
Celebrate everyday with joy the gift of Jesus for your life.
