Sinkhole
A few months ago I found that between my house and my neighbor’s house a small sinkhole formed under the sidewalk. Concerned that the situation could worsen and could cause harm to children playing in the area, I reported the situation to the county. The next day a brigade arrived and solved the problem by filling the sinkhole with soil.
Unfortunately filling the sinkhole with soil seems to be a temporary situation as the condition reappears after several weeks. After searching for information about the solution, I found that it involves certain steps that can be summarized as follows:
1) Dig until the base of the sinkhole is reached.
2) Determine the cause for the erosion.
3) Solve the problem that is causing the erosion.
4) Fill the sinkhole starting thick layer of rocks.
5) Frequently recheck the area to ensure that there has been no further erosion, and repair again if necessary.
This illustration has many parallels to spiritual life. Our lives are separated from God by a large sinkhole called sin. When this happens our lives are in danger until the problem is corrected. Solving the situation also requires several steps.
1) Acknowledge the situation and the danger this poses to our lives. For this, it is necessary to dig down to the root of the problem (what is undermining my relationship with God?). This can be a painful step that requires a high level of sincerity, but it is necessary to solve our serious situation.
2) Once we recognize our sin we need to confess to God in repentance.
When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all day long. – Psalm 32:3
3) The next step requires us to ask God to help us remove sin from our lives. This is not possible without a bedrock to block the sin that causes separation between us and God. The only rock that fills this void is Jesus. Without Him there is no way we can approach God.
4) Finally, and possibly most important step, but at the same the most ignored, we have to frequently verify that the sinkhole has not reappeared. You need to ensure that any neglects do not affect our relationship with God, creating a separation again. This is why we have to maintain an ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ as our Lord.
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” – Matthew 7:24-27
The sinkhole under the sidewalk can cause a situation that could bring harm to those who walk through the site, but the separation that sin brings between us and God can cause the worst harm that may occur to a human being: to spend eternal life without God.
Is there a sinkhole in your life? What are you going to do about it?
