Look in the mirror
Any person who has any sense about personal appearance will take a look in the mirror before leaving home. The purpose is to ensure that our appearance “does not speak ill” of ourselves. We do not want our appearance to give a bad impression about us.
The truth is that we can’t achieve a flawless appearance. It doesn’t matter how hard you work to improve your appearance there will always be something that tarnishes any level of “perfection” achieved. For example, you can’t avoid “visual accidents” that may be in your nose after sneezing (and who doesn’t sneeze?). These things have the ability to become the focus of attention, making any level of beauty achieved go unnoticed. It doesn’t matter how careful we are, a situation like this can happen to anyone.
The same thing happens with our “spiritual appearance”. Even if we make a great effort to achieve spiritual perfection there will always be something that will tarnish our achievement by moving the focus from whatever is “perfect” toward all imperfections. This can’t be avoided. In fact, if we look at our spiritual mirror we might not like what we see.
Ours attempts to achieve perfection are in vain. That is why God offers us His plan of redemption through Jesus. Through the sacrifice of Jesus our spiritual imperfections are covered with His perfection.
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. – Ephesians 4:22-24
Our efforts to achieve spiritual perfection leads nowhere, but when we allow the appearance of Jesus to substitute ours, all imperfections disappear before the glorious perfection of our redeemer.
May the next time that you look in the mirror, you see the image of Jesus.
