Depressed
There are many situations that can make us feel depressed: job loss, illness, family problems, financial problems, etc.
However, there are people who have no lack of any good and feel depressed. Depression is not always the result of problems. Depression can also come as a result of lack of purpose or meaning in life.
Everything has a purpose or meaning. We are not the exception. For example, a refrigerator is intended to preserve foods. If the refrigerator stops working it loses its purpose and is no longer necessary. When you feel that your life is meaningless depression is reflected through the feeling that your live have no purpose.
But, how can I serve a purpose that I do not know? The purpose of each object is defined by its creator, and usually specified in some kind of manual. The purpose of our lives is defined by our creator: God. Any effort in the direction to meet our purpose must begin in God, and in his word.
And this is life eternal, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent – John 17:3
Two points about John 17:3. First, life consists of knowing God and Jesus Christ. In other words, the reason for living is to know our creator. Anything else we achieve in our lives is secondary and therefore falls short in the aspect of helping us fulfill our purpose. We are unable to reach the meaning of life until we begin to know our creator. This leads to the second point. It is impossible to get to the full knowledge of our Creator in this life. Hence, “eternal life” is required to get to know God and fulfill our purpose. Fortunately we receive eternal life when we receive Jesus Christ.
For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known – 1 Corinthians 13:12
I think that in one way or another we all have fallen into some form of depression after having known God. This can happen when the search for God is not a continuous process, which can easily cause us to lose perspective and forget our purpose. What is important in these cases is to recognize our situation and return to our search for God.
But As for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped … I was so foolish and ignorant;
Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand. You will guide me with Your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:2,22-26
Find your purpose in the presence of your creator.
