In times like these …
Every day we are used to news that usually inform us of negative events: deaths, epidemics, wars, etc. Until some time ago they were news that affected other people or other parts of the world. It seemed that we were immune to the things that happened to others. But no more, now when we hear negative news we are involved directly or indirectly. Such is the case with the current economic crisis that is affecting the world.
There are already millions of people who have lost their jobs during the last year (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm) and thousands who have lost or will lost their homes. This crisis is affecting one way or another all inhabitants of the earth. We are hopeful that the government will get us out of this crisis, but the fact is that we need a miracle.
It is not the first time that a nation is desperate and without options. In the year 701 BC, Syria’s King Sennacherib invaded Judah. As part of the invasion Jerusalem was besieged. There were not many options: surrender to the enemy or starve (will have to eat their own filth and drink their own urine – 2 Kings 18:27) or even face death. In this difficult situation, aware that there was no alternative the King of Judah humbled himself before God and prayed. As a result, God heard his prayer and miraculously liberated Jerusalem (2 Kings 18:13-19:37).
Our current situation is very similar to that of this people. We reached the point where it seems that there is no solution.
In times like these it is necessary that, not only the leaders, but the entire nation humbles before God. In times like these it is necessary to recognize that we have lived too long time away from our Creator. In times like these we need to confess that God is our only hope. In times like these we need to cry to God and be confident that he will show his salvation.
