Don’t be disappointed
While listening to Christian radio I heard multiple Christians sharing their concerns about the election of a president who is known to have some point of views that are perceived contrary to Christian believes. Traditionally, Christians has been taught to avoid supporting any candidates whose platforms don’t agree with our teachings. The thought is that it would be nice to have laws that prohibit the things that are wrong.
The truth is that when Jesus was on this earth there were a lot of laws about what people could and could not do. However, the law only gives knowledge about what not to do, but offers no power over sin. The law will never be able to change our hearts.
These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. –Mt 15:8
For this very reason God sent His Spirit to dwell in our hearts:
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. – Ez 36:26-27
It is the church’s responsibility, and not the government’s, to teach about the Kingdom of God. Governments might be able to enact laws against abortion, gay marriages and other issues, but that will not change the hearts of the people that are willing to do such things. History teaches us that the primitive church began preaching in the worst imaginable conditions. It seemed like everything was against the church and yet they were able to evangelize most of the known world. However, when Christianity was made the official religion of the Roman Empire the church began its decadency. Why? Because forcing people to become Christians changed the name of their religion but not their faith; and certainly not their hearts.
The government is not called to be Jesus’ witness: we are. The government is not called to preach: we are. It would be foolishness to depend on laws for people to learn what we learned only through our relation with Jesus. The law has not stopped people from committing crimes. The law can not change a gay’s perspective about homosexual relations: Jesus can. The law can not make a woman love her unborn child: Jesus can. The only way this nation will come to Jesus is when we fulfill our responsibility to preach and make disciples.
This is not time to be disappointed, it is time to be responsible. It is not time to think about what the government can do for the church. It is time for the church to fulfill our role as Jesus’ witnesses. Change will come, not because of a new government, but because of the church doing what we are supposed to do.
