The Lord’s Prayer – the King (part 1)
In our previous blog we discussed some of the implications of the word “Father” in the Lord’s Prayer. Today we will go over the prayer and declaration of God as our King.
We know that God is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. However, humankind has been living under another kingdom since the fall.
- Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. – John 12:31
- I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me – John 14:30
- in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience – Ephesians 2:2
- 2 Corinthians 4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers
The word has not fared well under the current kingdom, but many have gotten used to its broken ways. There is no hope until we awaken to this reality and recognize that God is the real King. When we do, the understandable reaction is to pray for God’s kingdom to come.
When we pray “Your kingdom come”, we declare God as King over all the earth, but more significantly, we are asking God to rule over our lives (beginning with mine). A prayer like this requires engagement, but to do so, we need to understand the basic principles of God’s kingdom.
… “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. – Marc 12:28-31
Loving God is much more than an acknowledgement of who He is. Loving God requires our full involvement: heart, soul, mind, and strength. The members of His kingdom, those who love God, make it a priority to:
- spend time in His presence (intentional private time, as well as acknowledgment of His presence at all times)
- know His will by reading and studying His Words
- submit to His will by living by His Words
- trust Him as Lord over their lives
Loving on another is another priority in God’s kingdom. We will continue with this topic in our next blog.
