Suffering
Everyone has experienced suffering. So, every one knows that when you are suffering you are willing to do anything in order to stop it. This was the experience of a woman mentioned in the gospel of Mark.
A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding…over the years she had spent everything she had to pay [the doctors], but…she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” – Mark 5:21-34
In her desperation this woman wasn’t worried about interrupting Jesus in his way to save a little girl, or that she wasn’t even supposed to be in the crowd and much less touch Jesus, as according to the law her bleeding would have made them unclean. There was only one thing in her mind: touching Jesus’s robe would mean the end to her suffering.
Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. – Mark 5:30
Her faith in Jesus in the midst of her desperation meant liberation from her suffering.
But wait. Wasn’t there was a crowd? Then why is there only one healing story? Sometimes we are part of the crowd around Jesus, but we are not desperate enough to understand how much we need him. And if we are not desperate enough, we won’t get close enough for a miracle.
Just as then, there are many people in need of a miracle. However, our suffering is not just physical but often times emotional. We are desperate for satisfaction, love, affection, purpose, and belonging, and we can’t find it anywhere.
We hear of Jesus performing miracles and changing lives, but we think that we don’t need him. We are not desperate enough to be willing to take the step of faith that this woman took. Are we waiting until things get worse?
What is in your mind? The solution to your suffering is simple. You have a need and Jesus can satisfy it. Just be willing to get close enough to him. Then you will also hear the same words:
“…your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” – Mark 5:34
