Breaking the curve
Do you remember the concept of grading curves? This concept allowed normalizing the grades based on the average scores for the group. Perhaps you remember the curve as beneficial, as it allowed a grade that would have normally been average or poor to become above average or outstanding. Of course, this benefit was only available if nobody broke the curve with an outstanding grade.
The effect of the curve made an average grade look as outstanding but only when compared to other students’ grades – it changed nothing in relation to the standard.
Some people would like our actions to be measured based on a curve, but who would we be kidding?
You shall be holy, for I am holy – 1 Peter 1:16
We know what our grade is with regard to what God expects of us. For this reason many try to apply a grading curve to God’s standard. But what use is it if I am found ‘approved’ on the grading curve of this world, but after all I am found deficient with regard to God’s standard?
God’s standard would appear to be unfair when we consider that He tells us that he loves us. But it is only unfair if we try to accomplish it the wrong way.
As we know, Jesus broke the curve, getting a perfect score by living a sinless life. But he did not leave us without hope, for with His death He took our place and with His resurrection He achieved an outstanding grade for us before God. This grade is accredited to us when we put our faith in Jesus.
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. – Colossians 3: 3
God’s standard is still valid and has not changed, but the effort required to achieve it does not depend on us, but on our ability to allow our Savior to manifest Himself in our lives.
Take advantage of the perfect score available to you through Jesus.
