Pain
Pain is usually seen as something negative. Certainly no one in their right mind wants to be in pain. However, it could have positive aspects.
Pain could be the result of a health problem. In this case pain is positive if we pay attention to its signs and seek medical help so its cause can be identified, and we can undergo the required treatment. On the other hand, there is no doubt that if we ignore the signs of pain the result can have severe consequences which could include death. Another way to ignore pain is if we try to control it with non-prescription drugs that can only artificially numb the pain while the real problem is hidden.
Sin causes pain in those who have received Jesus as their Savior. This pain should serve as a warning sign, since sin separates us from God’s purpose for our lives: sanctification. The pain resulting from sin should lead the believer to a process that begins with identifying its root cause and ends with repentance (the treatment). Repentance is intended to rectify our path from the pathway that leads to sin to the pathway that leads back to God. Disregarding the pain signals can lead us to be desensitized in such a way that sin could become a habit, with the possible consequence of permanently turning away from our God.
As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. – 2 Corinthians 7: 9-10
May our hearts be vigilant for the signs of sin and open to the repentance that leads us to a life that honors our God!
