Flu
The flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches and stomach problems, among others. In the United States, the flu causes a range of 3,000 to 49,000 deaths annually.
Flu prevention includes the following steps:
- Get vaccinated every year (process through which the microorganism that causes the disease is killed or weakened and administered to people so that the body will recognize and produce defenses against the disease)
- Stop the spread of germs (avoiding contact with sick people and washing your hands often, etc.)
- Get immediate medical attention promptly in the wake of any symptom
It is important to follow these steps in order to avoid infection, and especially to avoid the possibility of becoming part of the statistics of the deaths caused by the flu.
But there is a much more dangerous disease than any other: sin. This is highly contagious and is the result of rejecting God. Symptoms of sin appear to be mild in the beginning when we reflect doubt or indifference to what God says in His word, but multiply rapidly when we start practicing behavior contrary to the scriptures, and culminates with the person living a life in open rebellion to God. The result of this disease is spiritual death: to live eternity separated from God and His glory.
This disease cannot be prevented with a vaccine, as sin cannot be healed with sin. For this reason Jesus took our place, bearing our sins on the cross. Therefore, our only possible immunization is to expose our lives to the presence of the one who has the power to defeat sin.
How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. – Hebrews 9:14-15
As we know, the possibility of getting this disease is present at all times, so let us keep immune through an ongoing relationship with Jesus, the one who can save us from the consequences of sin.
But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. – 1 John 2:1
