What’s on your wish list?
Christmas is the most anticipated day of the year for children (and adults as well). I remember as a child the excitement of creating my Christmas wish list. There was no better feeling than creating the list while going through pages of the Mattel catalog. What a thrill when it was time to open presents! But what a disappointment when instead of a toy we received clothes!
The wish lists in those days could include items such as race cars, toy guns, or perhaps a “Big Jim”. And of course, the list always included something which “we could not live without.”
Times have changed and now many lists include items that are equally desired by children and adults, such as smartphones, tablets, game consoles, or any item with the newest technology. Another thing that has changed is the amount of money spent on holiday gifts. We all want the best for our children, our husband/wife, and ourselves.
Sadly, what once we might have considered the best gift, after a few months it is no longer so exciting. That is when we realize how much we paid (or have to pay) for it. Was it worth it? Let’s face it, our kids do not know what is good for them. On second thought, even as adults we often do not choose what is best for us.
In these cases it may be that the worst consequence has been the misuse of our money, which we can recover from. Now, there are decisions with far greater consequences. We can have everything in life, but we need to make sure that we have what is most important.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? – Matthew 16:26
We can have everything in life, but what good is all this if at the end of our lives we don’t have entrance into the kingdom of heaven? We may not have the money to cover the cost of our most desired gift, but the cost for our most needed gift, the salvation of our souls, is already covered by Jesus. It is the only gift without which we cannot live. For Jesus this gift was worth it, but it’s up to us to decide to accept it and live each day treasuring it.
May the the most important thing on your wish list be to restore and maintain a relationship with your God!
