God is in Control
Life brings different challenges every day. This doesn’t seem to be a problem as long as we can control the situation. But the reality is that we can’t always be in control. In these cases, there is only one thing we can do: ask God to take control.
The Bible gives us some examples of what giving up control to God means. One example is Joseph. Joseph had a dream that revealed a position of authority over his brothers. Not knowing that it wasn’t the time for the dream to come true, Joseph shared his dream, and as a result was rejected by his brothers. The consequence was that his brothers decided to take revenge and sold him into slavery. This was just the first of a series of negative events that included being slandered, thrown into prison and forgotten.
A situation like this can lead a person to ask God things like, “What happened to what you promised me?” or “Have you forgotten me?” When we do not understand the situation, we think that God has lost control. But this is not so. God does not depend on our understanding of the situation to do what He wants to do.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord… “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. – Isaiah 55:8-11.
In Joseph’s case, when there seemed to be no hope for him after a series of events, was exalted to the second most powerful position in Egypt. And not only that, but through his leadership, Joseph was an instrument of God to save his family. When we look at the story of Joseph, we can understand that God was in control at all times, including negative situations. God used both negative and positive situations to accomplish His purpose. Sometimes you need to get to the point where there is nothing humanly possible that can be done, to see the wonders that God can do when He is in control.
And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. So now it was not you who sent me here, but God…. – Genesis 45:7-8
Another example was that of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego (Daniel 3:1-30), who proposed in their hearts to be faithful to God even knowing that this could result in their deaths. I think that if I was in a situation like this I would even try to control the situation through prayer asking God: “Remove these ungodly people from power,” or “Make that this law is repealed,” or “Do not let them find me.” But God’s plans always have a purpose that goes far beyond what we can imagine. In the case of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, they had to pass through their death sentence in order to see the hand of God giving life where there was supposed to be death. We will be able to see the miracle when we give God all the control.
It is good to lose control in the hands of God!
