Parents or children?
Raising children is not easy these days. Many of them do not ask, they just give us orders; they are not grateful, they are rather demanding; they do not ask permission, they just do what they want.
I think that every parent has had the experience of their children wanting to establish a relationship where it seems that they are the parents and we the children. This is a dysfunctional relationship. It is necessary for parents to fulfill their role. Parents are called to prepare our children to face life. It is our responsibility to educate them, transferring the lessons acquired from the experiences that life has given us.
It is possible that the way that our children behave now is just a reflection of the way we behave with our parents when we were kids. Worse, it is possible that we have the same attitude towards our heavenly Father. In our relationship with God we are children and not parents. However, how many times do we tell him what to do, how to do it, and when to do it? We treat God as if He was our son and we the father. It cannot be that way.
In our relationship with God, He wants us to be completely and totally dependent on Him. We can see this in the prayer Jesus taught us.
In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. – Matthew 6:9-10
When we pray “Your kingdom come” and “Your will be done”, we recognize God’s full authority over our lives, and that His knowledge lets us know what is best for us. When we submit to His will, we do it with the knowledge that when he says ‘No’ or when he says ‘Wait’ it is because it is the best for our lives, even though we might not understand. We can say that his “experience” as eternal God qualifies Him to know what is best for us.
It is possible that sometimes His plans interfere with ours, but when we recognize our role as children, and his role as Father, we know that the result of our obedience is blessings.
Rejoice in the knowledge that the omniscient and omnipotent God is steadfast in His role as your father.
