News of Great Joy
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord…” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” – Luke 2:10-14
During this time, many people celebrate Christmas, but few people celebrate Christ. This does not make any sense. How is it possible to celebrate the birthday of a person without honoring him?
Celebrating Christmas is much more than decorations, parties and gifts. I think that Christmas should be celebrated not only by remembering the birth of Christ, but also honoring Him by carrying out His work.
How do we do this? Being like Jesus.
What would Jesus do if he were walking among us today?
- Would there be someone from your community that He would help?
- Would He stop to encourage one of your fellow students/coworker?
- What would He do if He met a homeless?
- What would He do to help the hungry around the world?
- Would he stop to help someone in a stranded car?
- What would He do for those who left their homeland to get support for their family?
If we do what Jesus would do in these situations we would be as the angel who brought “good news of great joy .”
It’s easy to bless our family during Christmas, but let’s not forget that the news of great joy were intended “for all people“. Those who are followers of Christ have the responsibility to continue spreading the good news of great joy, not limited to carrying a word of encouragement, but in addition, if it is under our control, to make the miracle come true by providing a solution.
Only then others will join to sing the chorus of “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
