Mirror Mirror, tell me…
The mirror doesn’t lie. At least, that is what we want to believe. If you are like most people, you won’t leave your house before peeking at the mirror (a really long peek for some). You just want to make sure that everything looks ok. If not, you will do whatever it takes to make sure that you like what you see in the mirror. You take the necessary time to correct any ‘imperfections’ reflected in the mirror.
However, the mirror has some limitations. It will only be able to reflect your external appearance. Everything might look perfect in the mirror, but that ‘perfection’ doesn’t necessarily means that there are no hidden problems. It might be possible that there are some health problems beginning to affect your body. People might still look perfect in the mirror, but with a disease like cancer already affecting their internal organs. For that reason doctors recommend certain screenings for people in some group ages, and people predisposed to some health conditions. That way problems can be discovered before it is too late.
The same thing happens with our spiritual lives. The mirror tells you “you are a good guy, you haven’t kill anyone, you don’t lie…”, but the bible says:
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23
But the mirror doesn’t lie! Really? Your spiritual life might look perfect in the mirror, but, is there any spiritual cancer killing you? It is better to find out now, or it might be too late. We need a screening to make sure everything is fine; we need to open our bibles and begin reading our diagnostic. Unfortunately for us the diagnostic is a cancerous sin leading to death.
For the wages of sin is death – Romans 6:23a
But the bible provides us much more than a diagnostic; it also provides us with the prescription required for the treatment of our problems: Jesus. And different from most medical procedures and prescriptions, Jesus provides healing, and it is available free of charge.
but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:23b
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed – Isaiah 53:5
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. – Matthew 11:28
Don’t be deceived by the mirror anymore. We are predisposed to a deathly disease called sin, so let’s not lose any more time, get our screening done, and take our life-giving prescription.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. – Psalms 139:23-24
