Resolutions
As the end of the year approaches people begin to see the New Year as an opportunity to achieve new things. We tend to make resolutions about the things that we want to achieve.
- Lose weight
- Stop smoking
- Have your dream vacations
- Get a new home
- Get a better job
- Get a new car
- Etc.
Unfortunately many of these resolutions end up in nothing or are abandoned after a while, and at the end of the year we wonder, what happened?
There is nothing wrong with dreaming about all these things, but what if we include in our resolutions greater things? Why?
As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. – Psalms 103:15-16
Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment – Hebrews 9:27
We have one life, and there is only one thing we know for certain: it has a beginning and an end. As every year has its end, life in our bodies will also have an end. But in the same way that the end of the year does not mark the end of time, the end of our life in this body does not mark the end of our existence.
those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. – John 5:29
During our lives we will always try to achieve the best for us. What is better for life than life itself? This should be the greatest resolution of our lives. If any resolution can be considered “life or death” it should be this one. But there is only one way to ensure life beyond the existence of our bodies,
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16
In Jesus we have more than eternal life, but in him we also begin to live our earthly life in fullness and with a new perspective,
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! – 2 Corinthians 5:17
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. – John 10:10
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me“. – John 14:6
If we fail to achieve some of the New Year’s resolutions, what is the worst thing that could happen? The truth is that while there is life we can keep trying. But if we fail to achieve our greatest resolution we lose the real life.
My greatest resolution? I choose life. What about you?
I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live – Deuteronomy 30:19
