Ransom – Part 1
I’m interested in movies involving ransom though these always have a similar plot. I like the suspense that these films create through the development of the plot. I think that the appeal to these movies is due to the internal sense of justice that we all have in the midst of unjust situations.
The sequence of events of these films is more or less the same: a person is kidnapped, the kidnapper asks for a ransom in exchange for releasing the hostage, the hero risks his life, the hostage is released and the kidnapper always ends badly.
We can identify the main characters of these films as follows:
- The victim is a desperate person, which is not able to solve the situation by itself
- The kidnapper is a bad person who is willing to do anything to achieve his goal
- The hero is a person who has a special interest in the hostage, and is willing to give his live in order to free the hostage
The story of our lives is similar to that of the characters in these ransom movies. Not that we’ve been kidnapped, but we’ve all been held hostage by sin. As the hostages in the movies, we were unable to solve the situation by ourselves. And as a result of the abduction we were separated from God and our chance for eternal life.
for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23
For the wages of sin is death – Romans 6:23 a
As in these movies, our life depended on someone to pay the ransom, and at the same time be willing to sacrifice his life in order to save us from our condition. That someone is Jesus.
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins – Ephesians 2:1
Our hero (Jesus) paid the ransom for us (through his life), delivering us from our kidnapper (sin) and the fate that awaited us (death), and gave us the opportunity to return to a life of freedom forever (by restoring our relationship with the giver of life).
When we speak about the meaning of salvation we rarely stop to ponder about its implications. Without salvation we were destined to an eternity separated from God, and to suffer the consequences that this entails. But in first place we got to this condition because of sin. Therefore, the first thing that happens with our salvation is the deliverance from sin.
But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. – Romans 6:17-18
Thanks Jesus for rescuing us and giving us the gift of such a great salvation.
